Abs Workout

The famous six pack that flat stomach, we all want one and some go to extremes to try and get one. We spend endless amounts of time and money on achieving a flat stomach. This is the topic of today’s post.

Why do we obsess so much about our mid section muscles and do we need to. Although I do most of my exercise at home with weights or outdoors through running and cycling, I do occasionally go to the leisure center for a swim and afterwards I sometimes watch people training in the gym whilst drinking a juice. I started doing this because I had read that many people in gyms spend to much time on their abs workout in proportion to their overall workout. So I thought I would investigate.

What I saw was a lot of people spending far to much of their workout time on their Abs. The trouble is that you can have strong Ab muscles but not necessarily have that six pack showing. If you have a layer of fat over those muscles then there is no visible six pack. Doing endless sets of sit-ups or crunches or any other ab exercise is not going to burn this fat away.

So no matter how many reps and sets you do that six pack is not going to show, those exercises are not going to burn the fat away. You are better off spending more time on overall body exercises such as squats, lunges and body presses to name a few, that will burn fat from your body, these exercises will work the abs indirectly and have more chance of burning the fat in that area than a concentrated abs workout.

I am not saying that we shouldn’t be doing any ab work at all, we should, but not so that it is taking up to much of our available workout  time. We should try and make it a smaller percentage of our overall workouts. Do more overall fat burning exercises and then we have more chance of getting rid of the layer of fat hiding that six pack.
