Ankle weights

EXERCISING WITH ANKLE WEIGHTS

As I have mentioned ankle weights in my previous posts I thought I would explain them, so anybody who has not come accross them before hopefully this will help them understand ankle weights.

Ankle weights are placed around the lower leg  just above the ankle. These weights are good for exercises such as calf raises, leg extensions and leg curls infact any kind of leg raises. They will also add weight to your pull ups and dips. You wouldn’t use ankle weights for building muscle mass as they don’t go up to real heavy weight sizes, but if you are after muscle tone they will certainly assist in keeping toned.

You can put on ankle weights if you are just going for a walk, they will increase the intensity and are effective in the same way as adding any weight or resistance to any exercise you may do. In the same way you can also wear wrist weights when you go walking or running.

They are pretty cheap to buy as well and are available from any good sports store. They come in different weights, I think the smallest is 0.5kg approx 1.1lb, going up to 1kg  approx 2.2lb, 1.5kg approx 3.3lb and 2kg approx 4.4lb. There probably is heavier ones available but you wouldn’t find them in a regular sports store. But they aren’t designed to be to heavy they are to increase intensity to a work out, walk or run.

If you want heavy weights for building muscle then the gym is the place to go.

I hope this gives anyone who didn’t know of ankle or wrist weights or didn’t know whether they were any good or not an insight to there uses and effectiveness.

So the conclusion is if you want to a quick and easy way to add a bit of intensity to walking, running or even aerobics then try some ankle weights. If you want muscle mass they are probably not worth buying.

Here is a great set of good quality Ankle Weights for you to have a look at. Valeo are a well known make and are great quality so if you want ankle weights then these could be for you.
