WHAT IS THE CORE MUSCLE

Well it isn’t what is the core muscle it’s more like what are the core muscles. You here core muscle or muscles being mentioned a lot these days and for good reason. But what muscles are they ? Lets have a look…

When core muscles were first explained to me I was told it was the stomach muscles, fair enough it is but its not them alone there are more muscles involved that make up our core. Simple put without going into the muscle names which are all a bit Latin, if you discard your arms, shoulders and legs you are left with the core. So the muscles included in our core are all the abdominal muscles, the lower back muscles, the pelvic floor and the hip muscles.

Why are core muscles important for our health and fitness ? If we work our core muscles and develop a strong core then we will improve our posture and keep us upright and stable. If we have strong cores then we help protect our backs against injury and pain. A strong core will aid us as we grow old keeping us stable and strong.

Some exercises to include in your core muscle routines are Lunges, squats, back extensions, push ups and crunches these are just a few basic exercises that will strengthen your core muscles, there are many more exercises and many variations of each exercise.

Having a strong core is the base of good overall body strength. A shot put thrower for example may have strong arms and shoulders but if his core muscles are weak then he/she won’t be breaking any shot put records. A strong core is going to give the shot putter the body power base to make the most of those strong arms and shoulders and then be in a position to be the best.

So having a strong core is important for all of us not just top athletes. We need to be aware of this and incorporate the kind of exercises into our routines that are going to give our core muscles a good workout. So don’t forget strengthen that core.
