THE BENEFITS OF FRUIT
We are all aware that fruit is good for us, we don’t necessarily know why but we are told often to eat fruit as part of our diet to help us stay healthy. So why is fruit so good for us ? How much of it should we eat ? What are the benefits to eating fruit ?
Lets take a look at why fruit is of benefit to our health. People who eat fruit on a regular basis are said to be less prone to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, alzheimer’s and the big one cancer. How true this is I can’t say but can only go on what research has thrown up for the reason why fruit is so good for us. Fruits contain many vitamins and minerals and antioxidants these are good for our bodies and protect them against illness and free radicals.
Free radicals what are these ? Put very simply they are organic molecules that can bring about some diseases and cause tissue damage along with ageing.
Fruit is also good for our digestive system working as a natural laxative, providing our bodies with roughage and fiber to help get rid of our waste. So all this sounds good and do I eat fruit well yes I do. I never used to and only really started eating fruit when I started off on my exercise program back in January, But I have found that my skin feels better than it used to and my digestive system is more regular than it used to be. As for making me feel healthier, is that down to the fruit or the exercise ? Probably both.
We have all heard of the five a day. I try and have five portions of fruit everyday but sometimes its hard to eat five pieces of fruit everyday, so I add some grapes or strawberries or raspberries to my cereal in the morning which not only crosses off one of the five but stops the need for any sugar on the cereal. I then have a mid morning snack of a banana or orange or apple. Then a snack of one of the same in the afternoon. I will have a fruit juice at some point during the day and then in the evening I will cut up several different fruits into a bowl and pick at them while I watch TV (this replaced my normal chocolate fix). Before you know it you have hit your five a day.
So the easiest way to hit your five a day is replace any normal between meal snacks with a piece of fruit. This will be hard at first but it will become a habit after a while.
