SHOULDER MUSCLE EXERCISES

So we are going to exercise our shoulder muscles by using free weights. There are many different shoulder exercises but we are going to look at  three.

Military Press

The Military Press can be done on an adjustable bench with a barbell.

Bear in mind if you use a barbell never use a weight that is to heavy for you to do 10 reps with as this can be very dangerous. It is always worth having some one present when you do this exercise with a barbell to assist you.

You start this exercise by sitting on the bench with the back of the bench in the upright position. Put the weight behind your neck with hands wider then your shoulders. Push the weight up whilst breathing outwards, then lower the weight back to the start position whilst breathing in. Try not to lock the arms out when you push the weight upwards as this is not good for your elbow joint.

10 reps

Dumbell Press

You start this exercise by sitting on the bench with the back of the bench in the upright position. Hold the dumbells just above your shoulders and push the weight upwards whilst you breathe outwards and remembering not to lock your arms out. Then lower your arms back to the start position whilst breathing inwards.

10 reps

Shoulder Shrug

To do this exercise you will need the bench in the upright position.  You start this exercise by sitting on the bench with your back straight. Hold the dumbells with your arms by your sides. Now raise your shoulders up whilst breathing out.  Then lower your shoulders back to the start position whilst breathing in.

You can perform this exercise sitting as above or standing.

10 reps

Below I have included a link to a video clip from videojug, sometimes its easier to see these exercises being performed instead of just reading the text on how to perform them. This video shows you how to perform these exercises.
